On October 23, Drokpo Nepal organized a comprehensive menstrual hygiene and pad-making workshop for 56 young nuns at Arya Tara, with participants as young as seven. This session aimed to build confidence and awareness among these young nuns, helping them understand their bodies and the changes they will experience with menstruation.
The workshop covered essential topics, including an overview of the menstrual cycle, a comparison of various menstrual products with their advantages and disadvantages, and an exploration of common myths and misconceptions about menstruation.
Drokpo’s goal was to ensure these young nuns felt prepared for their first cycle by teaching them what a period is, where it comes from, and when it typically begins.
We also provided education on basic anatomy, focusing on the vulva, and practical tips for maintaining hygiene. The workshop addressed misunderstandings like the belief that menstrual blood and urine come from the same opening. By dispelling myths and reframing menstruation as a natural and positive process, we aimed to reduce the stigma that often surrounds it.
To make learning enjoyable and impactful, we incorporated engaging educational videos tailored to the young audience. Beyond education, Drokpo also empowered these nuns with practical skills by teaching them how to make their own reusable cloth pads—encouraging self-sufficiency and promoting sustainable practices.
This workshop reflects Drokpo’s dedication to equipping young nuns with the knowledge and resources they need to approach menstruation with confidence and dignity.
