Since 2018, Drokpo Nepal has been offering adult literacy programs specifically for the Tibetan and Himalayan communities who were deprived of education due to financial difficulties or heavy responsibilities in their earlier years. These classes are held five days a week from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.
Participants, including monks, nuns, and housewives aged 16 to 55, come to Drokpo's office to learn English, Tibetan and Math, recognizing its importance in today's world. Some students start from the basics, learning the alphabet, while others focus on basic conversation skills. Each class is organized into small groups that cater to different proficiency levels in both Tibetan and English.
During the winter, mothers from the Himalayan region who run tea houses and hotels attend classes with great determination, reminding us that it's never too late to learn. Nuns and monks take time from their busy schedules, whether it's during breaks from their monasteries, short visits to Nepal from India, or even from their household duties. Similarly, the program helps individuals who run restaurants in Boudha by teaching them basic English, Tibetan and Math to manage their businesses more effectively.
Our participants are enthusiastic and eager to learn. They leave each class with new knowledge and a sense of satisfaction. At Drokpo Nepal, we believe that education is for everyone and that there are no limits to what one can achieve through learning.
We understand that many adults may feel hesitant to acknowledge their literacy challenges and seek help. That’s why a key focus of our program is to build their self-esteem and demonstrate the benefits of learning to read and write.
Goals of the Adult Literacy Program:
- Provide educational opportunities to the underprivileged.
- Empower women to gain independence and support their children's education.
- Build self-esteem and confidence.
- Equip adults with skills that enhance their daily lives.
