Celebrating Culture and Connection: Drokpo Mercantile at the Himalayan Fair in Berkeley
After nearly a year of anticipation, Drokpo’s Drokpo Mercantile was honored to participate in the vibrant Himalayan Fair in Berkeley, California, held over the weekend of May 17, 2025. The experience was nothing short of meaningful.
We were warmly welcomed by the fair organizers and fellow vendors. Despite some initial fatigue and setup challenges, the positive energy and support from friends and neighboring stalls helped us get our space ready for the big weekend. With over 100 vendors present, the fairgrounds were a beautiful blend of colors, cultures, and crafts.
Day One began with a steady stream of curious and kind visitors even before the official opening. Though the pace was nonstop, we were deeply moved by the enthusiasm people showed for our work and products. Many attendees were eager to learn about our mission, and the response to our environmentally friendly, culturally meaningful goods - especially our Lungta (prayer flag) and Khatag (white scarf) - was overwhelmingly positive. Some guests returned multiple times and even brought friends to shop with us.
The atmosphere throughout the two-day fair was electric, filled with music, laughter, cultural exchange, and genuine connection. One of the most touching aspects of the event was the care and thoughtfulness of the organizers. Many took the time to check in, offer support, and share kind words about our booth and vision. Several even mentioned they had been following us on social media and expressed excitement about our presence. We were especially delighted to hear that the organizers plan to purchase our prayer flags for future fairs.
Beyond the business side of things, we were inspired by the event's commitment to sustainability. Recycling was taken seriously, with volunteers actively sorting waste to ensure minimal environmental impact. As a social enterprise rooted in Himalayan values and environmental awareness, this effort truly resonated with us.
The fair was not just a gathering of Himalayan communities - it was a celebration of global harmony. People of all backgrounds came together to appreciate the richness of Himalayan culture, spirituality, and artistry. From singing bowl meditations and yoga to the scent of incense (and cannabis) in the air, the setting paid homage to Berkeley’s legacy as the birthplace of counterculture and its long-standing connection to Himalayan wisdom.
As we wrapped up the weekend, we left feeling energized and affirmed. The experience was more than a marketplace - it was a reminder of why we do what we do. Sharing stories, values, and handmade goods that carry meaning - while connecting with those who care about conscious living - strengthens our commitment to our mission.
Huge thank you to Himalayan Fair team, committee, volunteers and fellow vendors, for the warm welcome and beautiful memories. We look forward to returning next year and deepening these connections even further.
